The circus billed itself as "the most colossal combination troupe in the world, featuring 25 Star performers and 30 Highly Trained Horses and Ponies"—and as the print shows, lions, tigers, and an elephant were part of the spectacle too. It was a massive success, even drawing the attention of the Emperor and royalty.
In November 1886, Chiarini and his troupe performed in Tokyo for Emperor Mitsuhito and his court, marking the first time the Meiji Emperor had ever witnessed a circus. In appreciation, the Emperor presented Chiarini with $5,000 in gold. This performance during the Meiji era (1868-1912), a time when Japan was opening up to the West and embracing industrialization, was a significant cultural event.
